History
The Pekingese, also known as the Lion Dog, Peking Lion, Pelchie or Peke are an ancient breed of toy Dog, originating in China. They are called Lion Dogs due to their resemblance to Chinese guardian lions (the Shih Tzu is also known as a Lion Dog in Chinese). The breed was favoured by royalty of the Chinese Imperial court as both a lap and companion Dog and its name refers to the city of Peking (Beijing) where the Forbidden City is located.
Description
Small brachycephalic (flat) faced breed, weighing up to 14 pounds, with a profuse, flowing coat. It is surprisingly heavy for its size with a stocky, muscular body.
Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Regular grooming daily to weekly due to their heavy and profuse coat with particular attention to the ears, eyes and skin folds over the nose. Bathing every 3 to 4 weeks and their coats can be trimmed to minimise grooming.
- Coat Type: Profuse coat with a dense undercoat.
- Moulting: Pekingese can be heavy shedders.
- Exercise Needs: A small backyard or terrace for it to play in is all that is required.
- Average Life Span: 10 – 15 years
Behaviour
- Family: Not recommended for families with very young children. They are not necessarily a lap Dog, however, like to be cuddled and made a fuss of.
- Temperament: They are “fearless” not recognising that they are a small Dog and their loyalty is one of their strongest qualities. Curious and playful, they are also willing to approach people.
- Trainability: This is succeeded using firm, kind commands whilst offering food as praise.
- Sociability (Other Pets): Very loyal to anyone that enters their living area.
- Barking: Barks as a warning when strangers appear.

Notes
The Pekingese are a fiercely loyal breed, love people and bond with their owner and surroundings. In the warmer weather it is advisable to keep them in a cool environment and let them out for exercise in the cool of the evening.
