The Dog Lovers Festival is all about celebrating the incredible diversity of the canine world, from beloved family favourites to truly rare and fascinating breeds you might never have seen before.
At the Brisbane Festival on 16–17 May, visitors will have the chance to meet more than 30 incredible breeds as part of the Breed Showcase. Among them are five particularly rare and extraordinary dogs we’re shining a spotlight on — offering a special opportunity to get up close with breeds that are not only beautiful, but steeped in history and tradition.
Whether you’re a lifelong dog lover or simply curious about the amazing variety within the canine kingdom, these rare breeds are guaranteed to capture your imagination.
Peruvian Hairless Dog
One of the most visually striking breeds in the world, the Peruvian Hairless Dog is exactly what the name suggests — a sleek, elegant dog with little to no hair. Originating in ancient Peru, these dogs were treasured by the Inca civilisation and are considered a national treasure in their homeland.
Their warm skin and graceful build make them unlike almost any other breed you’ll encounter. Despite their exotic appearance, they’re known for being affectionate, loyal companions who form strong bonds with their families. Seeing one in person is a rare treat for Australian dog lovers.
Yakutian Laika
Hailing from the frozen regions of Siberia, the Yakutian Laika is a resilient working dog developed by the Yakut people to pull sleds and hunt in some of the harshest climates on Earth.
With their striking wolf-like appearance, bright eyes and thick Arctic coat, Yakutian Laikas are built for endurance and survival. Pyrenean Mountain Dog
Also known as the Great Pyrenees, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog was developed to guard livestock in the rugged mountain ranges between France and Spain.
These majestic white guardians are both powerful and calm, bred to protect sheep from predators while remaining gentle with the flocks they defend. Their thick coat, imposing presence and serene temperament make them one of the most impressive livestock guardian breeds in the world.
